Words Matter...

We have all heard it said that your words matter, but do we pause often enough before we speak to actually think about what we are going to say?

Are there times when we should have nothing to say at all?

I am a storyteller at heart so there is no doubt in my mind that there are times I can ramble on about whatever the current topic. I too have to remind myself of the following important criteria:

  • Is what I am saying relevant or necessary?
  • Should I not be talking and simply listening?
  • Are my words meant to build or break?

What about the power of silence?

I read once that even a fool can seem wise by remaining silent. Putting some internal obligation on ourselves that we must always have a response is unnecessary. Sometimes those speaking to us (and sometimes more so "at" us) do not require a response. Other times it is best that you not engage at all.

There forever will be those who need to be heard above all others and have an opinion about anything and everything. That does not mean that you have to out talk, shout over, be more witty or even defend a point. Never forget the power of silence amid the noise.

So choose your words carefully when you do respond to or lead a conversation. Set the tone and be the example because people will rarely remember everything you said, but I assure you they will remember how you made them feel.

Also never forget that sometimes no words can be the most powerful response.
