On the Days You Feel Like You’re Failing
Share
There are days when it feels like nothing you do is right.
You replay conversations in your head.
You second-guess boundaries.
You wonder if you said too much… or not enough.
Supporting someone in addiction has a way of making you question yourself.
You try to stay hopeful.
You try to stay steady.
And quietly, you wonder if you’re making things worse instead of better.
If this feels familiar, please hear this:
You are not failing.
You are navigating something that has no clear map.
Some days you hold firm.
Some days you soften.
Some days you step back.
Some days you lean in.
None of that makes you inconsistent.
It means you are responding to a moving situation with a caring heart.
There is no perfect way to love someone through addiction.
There is only showing up with the best you have that day.
And that matters.
If today feels heavy, try to offer yourself the same compassion you give so freely to others.
You don’t have to get this right every time.
You don’t have to have all the answers.
You just have to keep going, one small step at a time.

If you’d like more support on this journey, I’ve written several books for parents and loved ones loving someone through addictive addiction. If it feels helpful, you can explore them here.
